Policy and practice

The innovations featured on the site cover both policy and practice. They take in research and development, capacity-building and the creation of learning materials, web-sites, DVDs and much else. To help you search Equal-Works as quickly and efficiently as possible, every piece of material on the site has been tagged in a number of ways. For convenience we’ve segmented this policy-practice focus into 9 generic groups with a total of 36 headings.

Generic Types of Activity

The purpose of the Equal programme was to allow experimentation to occur; and to test out potential new developments in combating all forms of discrimination and inequality in the labour market both for those in work and for those seeking work.  Some types of activities were of a strategic and philosophical nature, and focused for example, on establishing the vision and business imperative at a strategic level to create cultural change within or between organisations.  This generic group of activity types has relevance for all kinds of diversity and regeneration programmes by establishing a bank of resources and repository of good practice which can be used to inform future policy and practice.

Priority One Types of Activities

Priority One Types of Activities: extending employment opportunities

The objective of Priority 1 is to increase employment and reduce unemployment and inactivity.  Types of activity in this sub-section give hundreds of examples of how partnerships have tackled barriers to work faced by disadvantaged groups and include employment and skills measures to help participants improve their employability and enter jobs, including self-employment, social enterprise and business creation.  Activities are also included which help those entering jobs to sustain their employment, make progress at work and integrate into the workplace.  The Equal programme contained a wealth of activities which relate directly to Priority 1 in the new programme and give a rich source of proven methodologies, research, learning materials, project evaluations and other experience which can inform current best practice.

Priority Two Types of Activities

Priority Two Types of Activities: developing a skilled and adaptable workforce

The objective of Priority 2 is to develop a skilled and adaptable workforce by reducing the number of workers without basic skills; increasing the number of workers qualified to level 2 and level 3; reducing gender segregation in the workforce and developing mangers and workers in small enterprises. The Equal programme contained a wealth of activities which relate directly to Priority 2 in the new programme and give a rich source of proven methodologies, research, learning materials, project evaluations and other experience which can inform current best practice.

Types of Activities in both Priorities

Some types of activity appear in both Priorities: those which are key to both extending employment opportunities and in developing a skilled and adaptable workforce, namely skills for life activities and the skills needed for entrepreneurship, business creation and social enterprise.  The Equal programme contained a wealth of activities which relate directly to these key aspects of the new programme and give a rich source of proven methodologies, research, learning materials, project evaluations and other experience which can inform current best practice
