Wales focus
Wales had a population of 3 million in mid 2007. This was 56,000 more than in mid-2001 and an increase of 5.4% since 1981. In the second quarter of 2007 the employment rate (for people of working age) in Wales was 72%, lower than the UK rate of 74%. European Social Funding channeled through the Welsh Assembly Government is being used to help the region’s economic, social and environmental transformation by helping new and existing businesses to grow and move up the value chain. There is also focus on regenerating Wales’ most deprived communities and tackling climate change.
