Facilitating access

Definition: To combat discrimination faced by individuals and promote equality in the workplace and to test support mechanisms to help target groups integrate/re-integrate into the labour market

Theme A partnerships were about employability and access to work and have tackled issues ranging from career choice to creation of services supporting access to self-employment. Most partnerships focused strongly on the needs of specific target groups, including people with handicaps, the long-term unemployed, people with caring responsibilities, ex-offenders and women returning to work. Products cover the widest possible range, including manuals and handbooks of training material for beneficiaries of all types, for careers advisers and trainers, video and CD material, including some created by beneficiaries themselves, and digital tools to measure and track progress with ‘soft skills’.

ACE - Action for Carers and Employment >> Background The highly successful Action for Carers and Employment - ACE National - partnership led by Carers UK carried out ground breaking work in supporting the inclusion of carers in training and work, funded by the European Social Fund's Equal Community Initiative Programme. APE - Arts Participation for Employability Programme >> Background While employment rates for the West Midlands stand at just under the national average (74.2% in full time employment, Working Brief, Jan 2006), concerned local groups have identified factors that act as significant barriers to finding and sustaining meaningful employment. Bettercup Childcare >> Aims Finding and paying for childcare can be inhibiting for people trying to return to or remain in work. Projects (11), products (2)

Capacitate >> Background While unemployment is at an all time low, Jobcentre Plus figures show that in the County of Carmarthenshire 26% of the population of working age (14,000 people) are claiming Incapacity Benefit although there is a labour and skills shortage. Projects (1), products (2)

CILP - Cornwall Inclusive Learning Partnership >> Aim The Cornwall Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership involved all the key players in Cornwall, with voluntary/community groups as its core, and aimed to bring disadvantaged parents into learning/employment building on their initial engagement with childcare initiatives. Equal Employability >> Background In Scotland, areas of potential employment for people re-entering the labour market include natural heritage (of 11,750 UK employees with 2,200 additional employees each year), tourism (Scottish Tourism employs 8% of the population within a £4 billion per year (and growing) industry) and construction (33,000 new employees required in Scotland before 2006).
