Allardyce & Pearce’s mocking insult to Hammers fans

Insult to Hammers fans: Is West Ham’s history really pure fantasy?

Yet another pundit has joined the “be careful what you wish for” brigade, but this time it’s former Hammers coach and player Stuart Pearce.

Let’s be honest here, pundits are lining up to call West Ham fans deluded for daring to wish for a bit of ambition and entertainment. However, I didn’t expect to hear it from Pearce, especially not as part of a tag-team mocking spree alongside Sam Allardyce.

Sam Allardyce-Stuart Pearce-West Ham

“You’re not wrong Stu”: A smug Allardyce looks on as Pearce dismisses The West Ham Way as fantasy. A massive insult to Hammers fans.

The unfortunate exchange was broadcast on a show called ‘No Tippy Tappy Football with Sam Allardyce,’ which is available on Spotify.

During the podcast, host Natalie Pike asked Pearce, “Why are people still questioning David Moyes, do you think?”. It’s clear that when Pike says ‘people’, she means West Ham fans, and so does Pearce in his reply.

The former Moyes assistant said, “Some people have a hang-up about the style of football. I think it stems from the 1970s and days of Bobby Moore and Trevor Brooking. They’re looking at the academy of football sign on the door with rose-tinted glasses.”

“I think, if they’re honest, it’s not a time that ever really existed.”

Now, I’ll save my outrage for another time, but to suggest that the innovative Ron Greenwood and his successor John Lyall did not produce a footballing identity at West Ham is a massive insult.

Pearce continued, “In the hundred-odd years of history that West Ham have got, I think they’ve had three trophies. Since being the Thames Ironworks in the eighteen erm whatever years. They’ve only ever won four trophies, and Dave [Moyes] was part of that.”

Be careful what you wish for

“Under Dave, they’ve had trophies, they’ve had finals and semi-finals; sometimes it’s a case of be careful what you wish for.”

What made this inaccurate rant all the more galling was the smug look on Sam Allardyce’s face throughout. Clearly, Big Sam was in full agreement with Pearce in the latest tirade at West Ham fans for daring to want a bit of entertainment.

For the record, Moyes did not win us our fourth trophy, and I’d have expected Pearce to know that, considering he’s represented the club on three separate occasions throughout his career.

Hammers midfielder: We got it all wrong

We got it all wrong by paying Leverkusen too much respect

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse has essentially admitted that the Hammers got their tactics wrong last Thursday night against Bayer Leverkusen. The free-kick specialist confirmed what many already suspected: West Ham were intimidated by Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten team and set up too defensively.

However, JWP is eager to move past both the Europa League quarter-final first leg and Sunday’s lacklustre performance against Fulham in the Premier League.

“It’s not hard to get yourself up for a European quarter-final, so we just need to utilize the time we’ve got, take what we can from the Fulham game, and do what we need to do to come back stronger,” said Ward-Prowse on the official website.

We got it all wrong: Ward Prowse has admitted the Hammers sat back and showed Leverkusen too much respect

He added, “We all know Leverkusen is a good team, but personally, I think we showed them too much respect in the first leg, and we didn’t quite pack the punch that I think we can.

“We need to go into Thursday all guns blazing, and we know the first goal is going to be crucial. We have to make sure it’s us who get that goal, and we need to use the occasion and the atmosphere to our advantage.

“These sorts of nights are what I came to West Ham for, and it’s going to be a really special spectacle. Let’s hope we can create some more amazing memories under the lights.”

Hammers loan star unlikely to return

Loan star Downes is unlikely to return if Saints get their way

Flynn Downes is looking increasingly unlikely to return to West Ham next season, especially if Southampton gain promotion. And that is news that will come as a boost to Saints players and fans who are clearly impressed with the Hammers loanee.

Full-back Kyle Walker-Peters is hopeful that Downes will remain with Southampton for the 2024/25 season, following his impressive performances during his time with the Saints.

loan star Downes looks unlikely to return

Despite a recent disappointing defeat to Ipswich Town that seemed to derail their chances for automatic promotion, Russell Martin’s squad still retains a solid opportunity to break into the top two.

Walker-Peters, a standout full-back for the club this season, highlighted the significant impact Downes has on the team and his influence on the game.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender shared with the press, “He stepped up and delivered once again. He was a bit upset about their second goal, so he really pushed himself, and fortunately, he scored the decisive goal for us. He’s proven himself to be an exceptional player.”

West Ham in Race Against Time

West Ham United faces a nervous wait regarding the fitness of star forward Jarrod Bowen ahead of their Europa League second leg against Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday.

Bowen is injured in Wolves v West Ham Premier League game-set to miss Leverkusen

Bowen in race against time

Bowen missed the first leg due to a back injury, and the Hammers are anxious about his availability for the crucial return match at home. His presence is critical, especially considering West Ham needs to overturn a 2-0 deficit to advance to the semi-finals.

Manager David Moyes is determined to give Bowen every chance to recover, potentially delaying a decision until the very last minute. An open training session is scheduled for Wednesday morning, followed by Moyes’ pre-match press conference.

The 26-year-old has been West Ham’s leading scorer this season with 19 goals across all competitions. His absence would be a significant blow to their attacking threat against an in-form Leverkusen side.

West Ham are already without midfielder Lucas Paqueta due to suspension, further hindering their options. Bayer Leverkusen presents a daunting challenge. They are the reigning Bundesliga champions, currently unbeaten in 43 games under manager Xabi Alonso.

West Ham needs a miracle turnaround against a seemingly unstoppable Leverkusen. Bowen’s potential return offers a glimmer of hope, but the Hammers face a race against time to get him fit for this crucial European encounter.

West Ham Prepares for Post-Antonio Era with Amoura Bid

West Ham United  have acknowledged the impending departure of club legend Michail Antonio and are actively seeking his successor.

The 34-year-old Jamaican striker’s contract expires at season’s end, and a contract extension seems unlikely. He has been a vital part of David Moyes’ system, but his age necessitates a long-term solution.

Also David Moyes‘ future at West Ham is unclear, potentially impacting transfer plans. Nevertheless, the club is pushing forward with squad renovations.

As a result, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise’s Mohamed Amoura has become a key target for West Ham. The Hammers have reportedly launched a €15 million bid, but the Belgian club is seeking closer to €20 million. The 23-year-old Algerian striker boasts an impressive record in the Belgian Pro League. He has netted 17 goals and provided 2 assists in 25 appearances, demonstrating his goal-scoring prowess. (stats from whoscored)

Amoura is not just a finisher; he creates chances for himself and teammates (6 big chances created this season) with a remarkable 21% goal conversion rate (missing only 3 big chances).

Like Antonio, Amoura utilises his pace effectively. However, statistics suggest Amoura possesses a superior finishing ability.

West Ham faces competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Wolverhampton Wanderers for Amoura’s signature. Proactiveness will be key in securing him.

Make it so Mr Steidten !

West Ham Sets Sights on Free Agent Left-Back Juan Miranda

West Ham United looks to be bolstering their defensive options this summer with a focus on signing Spanish left-back Juan Miranda.

According to HITC, West Ham scouts watched Miranda in Real Betis’ recent clash against Celta Vigo. The 24-year-old has been on West Ham’s radar since January and is seen as a potential replacement for Aaron Cresswell.

Miranda, available on a free transfer in the summer, has attracted interest from Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Brentford. His age, experience, and free agent status make him a desirable target for several clubs.

A product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, Miranda has gained experience throughout Europe. After his debut for Barcelona in 2018, he had loan spells at Schalke and Real Betis before signing permanently with Betis in 2021.

Cresswell’s contract expires this summer, and his recent struggles against Bayer Leverkusen highlight the need for a replacement. While a player-coach role at West Ham has been mentioned, a new starting left-back appears more likely.

With Miranda available on a free transfer and Cresswell’s future uncertain, West Ham seems determined to secure Miranda’s signature. His experience and potential make him a valuable addition to the West Ham squad

Man City Playing Games with West Ham Over Paqueta Fee

As previously reported on CandH, Manchester City’s renewed interest in Lucas Paqueta feels like a classic case of buyer’s remorse. They clearly still want the Brazilian playmaker, but their latest tactic seems to be squeezing West Ham on price.

Let’s be honest, the timing of City’s reported desire for a lower fee is awfully convenient. It coincides perfectly with Paqueta’s recent dip in form. West Ham needs every penny they can get from a Paqueta sale to fund their summer rebuild, and City knows it.

This feels like a replay of past West Ham transfer sagas with Payet and Arnautovic. Players push for moves, and the club ends up accepting less than desired. West Ham can’t afford another repeat.

David Sullivan and Tim Steidten need to dig their heels in. Paqueta has a release clause for a reason. City can either pay it or walk away. West Ham needs the funds for their rebuild, and they shouldn’t be pressured into accepting a discounted price, especially considering Paqueta’s talent and potential.

The Bernardo Silva situation at City doesn’t change this. If they truly value Paqueta, they’ll pay the fair price. West Ham shouldn’t be bullied into a fire sale.

Steidten’s Summer Showdown

West Ham‘s Director of Football, Tim Steidten, faces a monumental task this summer. Having overseen successful signings like Alvarez, Kudus, and Mavropanos (with the occasional hiccup), he’s now entrusted with a massive summer rebuild.

Steidten’s summer showdown

West Ham seems to be embracing a more continental approach to transfers, a shift potentially influenced by Steidten’s background at Bayer Leverkusen.

Let us not forget that up to twelve players could be departing the club, potentially requiring significant squad turnover. Adding to the pressure, some key players like Soucek and Coufal might also need replacements.

Steidten’s recent trip to Brazil suggests a search for young talents with potential, a shift away from expensive established players. This strategy could unearth hidden gems like Paqueta or Kudus at bargain prices.

Steidten’s challenge is clear: rebuild a potentially depleted West Ham squad with limited financial resources. His ability to identify and acquire young talent will be crucial for the club’s future success.

Irons looking at Pavlidis

West Ham United faces a significant summer rebuild, with a focus on bolstering their aging and depleted squad.

The Hammers have a pressing need for at least one, if not two, new strikers. Michail Antonio’s age and Danny Ings’ lack of form and inability to fit in with David Moyes‘ system necessitate reinforcements.

West Ham has long been linked with Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis. His performances against them in European competition last season left an impression. With his contract expiring next year, Pavlidis reportedly desires a Premier League move, and AZ Alkmaar is willing to sell for a reasonable £12-15 million. This price tag makes him a potential bargain for a versatile 25-year-old attacker.

West Ham’s summer rebuild is crucial. The potential addition of Pavlidis, coupled with a possible second attacker, offers an exciting prospect for fans. Steidten’s ability to identify talent and secure value for money will be key to the club’s success.

West Ham set to adopt new financial model

The Premier League appears to be set to replace Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR)

A number of alternative options, such as a luxury tax and a salary cap, have been discussed  but the top flight league appears ready to press ahead with a basic squad-cost ratio system.

This model will allow clubs to spend up to 85 per cent of their revenue on transfers, wages and agent fees. A similar system is being adopted by UEFA whereby clubs in European competition can only spend 70 per cent of their income.

Last Thursday Premier League shareholders meeting saw the 20 clubs hold two votes on the new rules, according to Sky Sports, one of which reached a unanimous verdict. Now said to be agreed in principle, the league will aim to enshrine in it their rulebook at their summer AGM.

As West Ham turnover was £237m last season it would mean they could spend £201m on wages, agent fees and transfers.

With the Hammers wages running around £137m and £13m  of agent fees that new financial model would leave around £51m in transfer amortisation for West Ham.

As West Ham have been abiding by the UFEA financial control system this does not pose a problem for the club.
